RED FERN THEATRE COMPANY, Artistic Director, Melanie Moyer Williams, and Artistic Producers, Andrea Day and Kel Haney, are pleased to announce the world premiere production of GENTRIFUSION a series of short plays searching for the truth behind the gentrification of New York. GENTRIFUSION performs in a three-week limited engagement at the LABA Theatre at the 14^th Street Y (344 East 14th Street between First and Second Avenues). As per the mission of Red Fern Theatre Company, that each production is paired with a philanthropy whose work relates to the social themes of the play, GENTRIFUSION partnership will be announced. Performances begin Thursday, January 27 and continue through Sunday, February 13. Opening Night is Saturday, January 29 (8 p.m.).

In GENTRIFUSION, playwrights Carla Ching, Joshua Conkel, Michael John Garcés, Jon Kern, Janine Nabers and Crystal Skillman, explore the different truths surrounding the gentrification of New York’s neighborhoods. The playwrights were charged with breaking down the cliched idea of "gentrification". Their pieces dig deeper to address the ways that change both improves and diminishes a community. All residents are given voice in this series, ultimately discovering that both long time residents and the new crop of gentrifiers benefit and suffer in different measures and different ways.

Directors include John Giameptro, Colette Robert, and Moritz von Stuelpnagel

The production features scenic and costume design by Katherine Akiko Day and lighting design by Marie Yokoyama. Michal V. Mendelson is the production stage manager and and projections have been created by photojournalist and documentary filmmaker, Dennis Ho (http://dwho.com/images.html).

GENTRIFUSION plays the following schedule through Sunday, February 13:

BIOGRAPHIES

THE RED FERN THEATRE COMPANY (RFTC), founded in March 2006, strives to provoke social awareness and change through its theatrical productions and outreach. Each play produced by the Red Fern Theatre Company addresses social issues that range in scope from local to global. Each production is paired with a philanthropy whose work relates to the social themes of the play. We educate our audience on the philanthropy’s mission, and a portion of the ticket sales from each play produced is donated to the designated philanthropy. By forming this association, RFTC is able to respond directly to the people affected by the issues addressed in the play. To date, Red Fern has produced the revivals of ten plays, one New York premiere, and the World premiere of a commissioned collection of short plays. The RFTC is a 501(c)(3) organization. After a sold-out two weeks of Best Of 2010, the NEW YORK NEO-FUTURISTS are back in 2011 with their ongoing, award-winning show Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind beginning Friday, January 7th at the Kraine Theater (85 East 4th St). Performances take place Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30pm.

Join Roberta Colindrez, Cara Francis, Ryan Good, Alicia Harding, Christopher Loar and Dan McCoy as they launch the New York Neo-Futurists sixth year of Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind, an ever-changing, lightening-paced attempt to perform 30 Plays in 60 Minutes.

The New York Neo-Futurists are also headed to Chicago with their 2009 acclaimed prime-time show Laika Dog in Space, created by Rob Neill, Eevin Hartsough & Jill Beckman, under the direction of Phil Ridarelli, with music by Carl Riehl. Performances begin Friday, February 3^rd and continue through March 12^th, 2011 at The Neo-Futurarium (5153 N. Ashland, Chicago).

Drawing inspiration from the famed French children's story "The Little Prince," and the 1960's cult television show "The Prisoner", the New York Neo-Futurists interpreted the story of Laika, the first mammal in space, for the Ontological-Hysteric Incubator in 2009. Now they are bringing their take on Laika's experience to the Neo-mothership. Puppetry, dance, art installations, live music, and a serving of borscht shuttle audience members back to the mid-50's Soviet space program. The local production fuses Chicago elements to the NY original through musicians, direction and appearances by Chicago Neos.

In Joanne Sydney Lessner’s new hilarious revenge comedy, a pair of married opera critics are forced to reexamine their priorities when the tenor whose career they ruined moves in with them.

Carrie Greenlea is an opera critic who enjoys skewering singers for everything from bad high notes to bad nose jobs. Her husband and fellow critic, Norman, prefers to equivocate rather than hurt anyone’s feelings. When Stefano Donato, a mediocre Italian tenor whose career they have jointly ruined, moves in with them, he proceeds to exact revenge. Events reach critical mass when their household is further invaded by their Bette Davis-impersonating editor; a marginally talented, but resourceful soprano; and Stefano’s desperate wife. For Critical Mass, playwright Joanne Sydney Lessner drew on her own experience reviewing recordings and performances for Opera News over the past decade.

“Writing Critical Mass was my way of working through what I consider to be a solemn responsibility,” says Lessner. “To find the comedy, I took one of my fears as a critic – finding myself face to face with someone whose performance I didn’t like – and drew it out to the extreme. There are moments when the play borders on farce, and there’s a fair helping of operatic excess, but it does explore, quite seriously, the nature and purpose of arts criticism. I think critics can lose sight of the fact that they have the power not just to derail a single career, but also to squelch a vulnerable art form. But because I’m still also an active performer, I can appreciate both sides of the equation.”

The New York Musical Theatre Festival, Patricia Miller and DiStar Productions/Diana Glazer are pleased to announce the world premiere production of William Hauptman and Jimm Wann’s THE GREAT UNKNOWN, choreographed by Liza Gennaro and directed by Don Stephenson. THE GREAT UNKNOWN will play a limited engagement at the Theater at St. Clement’s (423 West 46^th Street, NYC). Performances begin Tuesday, October 5 and continue through Saturday, October 16.

The Great Unknown is a jubilant Americana musical about big dreams and even bigger risks.

Hoping to inspire and revive a fractured nation, one-armed Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell leads a daring expedition of veterans down the Colorado River to the Grand Canyon, in the spring of 1869. Aware of the physical dangers, Major Powell barely anticipates the emotional and spiritual challenges of the trip, leading back to the War.

The guide of the expedition is Somers, who escaped from slavery and embraced the new world of the West. Major Powell’s wife Emma Dean, a noted environmentalist of the day, is present in the minds and hearts of both Major Powell and his brother Walter, a survivor of Andersonville prison; as they are in hers.

With a contemporary folk/musical theatre score enhanced by environmental elements, The Great Unknown is an American musical adventure.

The production stars Tom Hewitt (Broadway: title role in Dracula, The Musical; Frank ‘N’ Furter in The Rocky Horror Show (Tony, Drama Desk nominations), The Boys From Syracuse, Scar in The Lion King, The Sisters Rosenzweig) as Powell, Dan Amboyer (Play About the Naked Guy) as his brother Walter, Kristin Maloney (NYMF Alum War Brides and Liberty Smith) as his wife Emma and Bobby Daye (Broadway: Shrek, The Color Purple, The Lion King, and Smokey Joe’s Café) as Somers.

The production features scenic/props design by Edward K. Ross, costume design by Martin T. Lopez, and lighting design by Christopher E. Edwards. The sound designer is Daryl Bornstein.

Oberon Theatre Ensemble is pleased to announce that its world premiere production of ORDER by Christopher Stetson Boal (23 Knives, Crazy for the Dog) has been extended one-week, after receiving fantastic industry and audience response. Directed by Tony Award nominee Austin Pendleton, ORDER is currently playing at Off-Broadway’s Kirk Theatre at Theatre Row (410 W 42nd St). With the extension, performances continue through Saturday, July 3rd.

ORDER is the darkly hysterical and ultimately tragic story of Thomas Blander, a former philosophy teacher determined to be mild and polite in a violent and greedy world, whose plan is upended when he's possessed by a creature claiming to be an ancient entity of power and hunger. The creature (real? imagined?) brings an entirely new philosophy to Blander - undeniable lust for power and insatiable appetite - that ultimately includes dining on his enemies - and his friends.

The music of Vivaldi and the rhythm of the djembe interweave with Shakespeare's elegant language in this tragic masterpiece. A twist on "The Maids"

The Curious Frog Theatre Company's production of Jean Genet's The Maids, directed by Tracy Cameron Francis, will be performed Thursday, April 22nd through Saturday May 8th at a Loft in Chelsea: 306 8th Avenue between West 25 & 26th St in Chelsea is conveniently located across the street from the C and E subway station and on the M7 bus route. Most people are aware of this play with it's subversive maids acting out their independence to their superior "Madame". This version is done with a twist, on location in a Chelsea loft, with a multi-enthnic cast, and with the character of Madame being played by a man, as Genet intended.

As Jean-Paul Sartre describes in his introduction, “The most extraordinary example of the whirligigs of being and appearance, of the imaginary and the real is to be found in Genet’s The Maids…Two maids both love and hate their mistress. They have denounced her lover to the police by means of anonymous letters. Upon learning that he is to be released for lack of proof, they realize their betrayal will be discovered, and they try to murder Madame. They fail and want to kill themselves. Finally, one of them takes her life, and the other, left alone and drunk with glory, tries, by the pomp of her posturings and language, to be equal to the magnificent destiny that awaits her.”

The New York Innovative Theatre Foundation, the organization dedicated to celebrating Off-Off-Broadway, is pleased to announce that Ben Hodges (editor, Theater World) and Abby Marcus (managing director, Vampire Cowboys) are the new co-chairs of the Honorary Award committee, filling the vacancy left by Leonard Jacobs (Clyde Fitch Report). The Innovative Theatre Foundation recognizes and appreciates the five years of service and dedication by Mr. Jacobs.

The applications for the 2010 Honorary Awards are available online and are due by 6pm on May 1, 2010.

The Honorary Awards Committee is comprised of people deeply grounded in the Off-Off-Broadway community. This year, the committee welcomes two new members; performance artist, Desiree Burch and publicist, Katie Rosin. Ben Hodges (Co-Chair of the Honorary Awards Committee) is editor in chief of the Special Tony Honor Award?winning Theatre World, which, at sixty-six years of age, is the most complete annual pictorial and statistical record of the American theatre, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, Off-Off-Broadway, and regional theatre productions. Ben served as executive producer of the Theatre World Awards for Outstanding Broadway and Off-Broadway Debuts from 2002-2007 and was presented with a 2003 Special Theatre World Award in recognition of his ongoing stewardship of the event. Ben has also served as executive producer LAMBDA Literary Foundation ?Lammy? Awards, given for excellence in LGBT publishing. His independent theatrical publications include The American Theatre Wing Presents: The Play That Changed My Life: America?s Foremost Playwrights on the Plays That Influenced Them, The Commercial Theater Institute Guide to Producing Plays and Musicals, Forbidden Acts: Pioneering Gay and Lesbian Plays from the Twentieth Century, and Outplays: Pioneering Gay and Lesbian Plays from the Twentieth Century.

Theater Talkback: Charles Isherwood Answers Readers’ Questions

With all the shows that are in the New York City area, including Off and Off Off Broadway, and regional and school productions, how is it determined which ones are reviewed in the Times? Are you ever sent to review something and decide that it isn’t something that should be in the paper and then don’t write about it? — donlincoln2

The Times reviews all Broadway productions and all the Off Broadway productions from established not-for-profit companies. When it comes to Off Off Broadway things are trickier, since it’s a universe unto itself that is sometimes hard to navigate.

The theater editor, currently Stephanie Goodman, in consultation with the critics, determines which shows to cover using various criteria, generally related to the prominence of the artists involved and the reputations of the companies. And sometimes downtown buzz lets us know which new companies and unknown (to us) artists to cover. But it’s not an exact science; occasionally a worthy show goes uncovered.

And yes, on a couple of occasions I’ve decided a show I planned to cover is better left unremarked upon. But I’ll name no names here.

As she reveals memories, lessons, and losses... the collaboration on the book grows, and so does the friendship between Anna and Craig.

IDENTITY PRODUCTIONS is pleased to announce the world premiere production of Nicholas Linnehan’s, EROSION, directed by Andrew Rothkin. EROSION will play a three-week limited engagement at the Spoon Theater (38 West 38^thStreet, 5^th Fl.) Performances begin Wednesday, January 13^th and continue through Saturday, January 30^th. Opening Night is Thursday, January 14^th(8 p.m.).

Erosion is the story of a young gay man’s depression resulting from his inability to maintain relationships. After meeting a man of interest in a group therapy session he is catapulted into a parasitic relationship of drugs and dependency, which ultimately threatens to destroy him.

The story is told through a unique look inside his therapy workbook, his psychiatric sessions with his doctor, and the use of the ensemble who play various internal struggles and people in his life.

Featuring Teisha Bader, Jimmy Brooks, JR., Joane Cajuste, Frank Cruz, Marc A. Graiser, Gillian Hurst, Diana K. Lee, Max Rhyser, Daniela Thome and Matt Weaver.

The production features scenic design by Alvaro Sena, assistant direction, stage management and costume design by Phillip Chavira, and lighting design by Casper De la Torre. Erin Salm is the dramaturg.

Clyde Fitch Report asks "Sartre" 5 Questions

"The inescapably French philosopher, playwright, screenwriter, novelist, political activist and critic Jean-Paul Sartre died in 1980. But his distinctive, ineludible 20th century ideas — Existentialism and the ever-conflicting glories of the left — have remained as examined, thrashed about and cautiously celebrated as they ever were during his own time.

Here in New York, meanwhile, a company called Nutshell Productions is mounting what could well be the umpteenth revival of Sartre’s play No Exit, running at the Times Square Arts Center (300 W. 43rd St., 4th Fl.) through Dec. 6. The production, directed by Robert Haufrecht, translated by Samuel Gilbert, features Richard Hymes-Esposito, Geraldine Johns, Karen Giordano and Etienne Navarre playing the characters caught in Sartre’s keen underworld of the mind.

Three special guests are locked in a room with no windows, no mirrors, and only one door, in what might be Hell. All expect to be tortured until they realize they are there to torture each other, which they do effectively by probing each other’s sins, desires and unpleasant memories. Experience The ToyMaker, which follows the story of Sarah, a young woman who is struggling in her marriage after two failed pregnancies. Rumors of a childless toymaker of the past set her on a desperate search for the last toy made by this man. Thus begins a journey that spans the globe and time itself. The ToyMaker was inspired by the true events of June 10, 1942, when the small mining and farming village of Lidice, Czechoslovakia was destroyed by German forces as a reprisal for the assassination of SS Leader Reinhard Heydrich. Sarah travels to this village weaving together this tragic slice of history and the humanity of those who perished, with a contemporary personal journey, creating a deeply moving portrait of love, family, and friendship.

Sarah's quest to find the 'childless toy' and solve the mysteries of a village destroyed by war lead her to a destiny of fulfillment she once thought impossible.

Jeremy Bloom (“Stylish and inventive”-Theatermania; “Appropriately Pure”-New Yorker), and 2009 Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab members Will Fulton, Annie G. Levy and Gabriella Willenz, are all scheduled to direct 4 VARIATIONS OF MEE dedicated to OBIE award winning playwright Charles Mee. A one night only benefit event at 7:30pm, Sunday, October 18th, at The ArcLight Theater (152 W. 71st Street).

A testament to Mee’s (re)making project, these 4 emerging directors will display their strengths and creative aesthetics, as they each sequentially approach a quadrant of Charles Mee’s BIG LOVE, a tale of fleeing brides, forced marriages, and murdered grooms (a modern re-making of one of the western world's oldest plays, The Danaids by Aeschylus).

Laid bare under such catastrophic shoes about to drop, how does one plow through an average day? As you might've guessed, Ginny turns to preaching the gospel. After all, she's gifted. She's got fire & brimstone. Healing hands. And somehow, the full text of the bible committed to memory. In the pursuit of soul saving, these gifts are invaluable. To Isaac Thigpen of Christ's Road Show Tent Revival, Lil' Gin Walker's talents are gold. When she preaches-the collection plate doth runneth over. The locals in a Scottish pub take us back to 1603 where renowned minstrel Thomas The Rhymer has set out to write his masterpiece-a heroic ballad of mortal derring-do. But when he is cursed by the Queen of Elfland with a tongue (and a quill) that cannot lie and confronted with a world that refuses to play by storybook rules, Thomas' heroic masterpiece seems determined to remain unwritten in this rollicking Scottish musical comedy.

Marrying Meg follows Thomas The Rhymer who chronicles the fate of 22-year-old Meg, still unmarried due to one of his rhymes about her admittedly large mouth. Meg's father, Sir Gideon, finds a solution in a young 16-year-old captured in battle. Will he marry Meg? Or be hanged for treason? All ingredients for the kind of "true story" Thomas The Rhymer has been looking for.

The Astoria Performing Arts Center (APAC) is pleased to announce that Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman and Steven Schwartz’s Children of Eden will be the mainstage productions for their ninth Season in Astoria. With these choices, APAC continues its tradition of bold choices in the ever evolving Astoria, a place mentioned in A.O. Scott’s review of the film, Julie and Julia, “Queens [is] demographically the most cosmopolitan of the five boroughs and something of a foodie mecca.” APAC is partnering with some local cultural institutions and the local restaurants Scott alludes to, enhancing the overall experience of their productions.

Artistic Director, Tom Wojtunik, who directed last season’s sold-out production of the musical Ragtime, will direct both productions, honing his artistic vision for APAC and uniting the shows both creatively and thematically. He addresses the surprising similarities of the projects, “On the surface the mainstage productions this season couldn’t be any different: McDonagh’s The Pillowman centers around a series of gruesome child murders, while Stephen Schwartz’s Children of Eden is a family-friendly retelling of the Book of Genesis. Still, I found the pairing intriguing--both are highly theatrical works that explore and celebrate the art of storytelling, albeit to very different ends. I think APAC audiences will find our season entertaining and thought-provoking as we explore what social responsibilities, if any, we have as storytellers.”

The season commences November 5^th with Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman. The play, which will run through November 21^st, is a dark comedy about the interrogation of a fiction writer, whose short stories have eerie similarities to local horrific child murders. Nominated for the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play The Pillowman will run through November 21^st. A change in this year’s performance schedule, the shows will now run Thursday thru Saturday at 8 pm with no show Sunday and an added Saturday matinee at 2 pm.

In May APAC will be producing Stephen Schwartz’s musical, Children of Eden, book by John Caird, based on a concept by Charles Lisanby, a show which has never had a full production in New York City (closest was a 1998 production at Papermill Playhouse and a benefit production presented by the York Theatre for World AIDS Day in 2003). Children of Eden takes its plot from the most influential of stories, the Bible, with the first act centering on Adam & Eve and Cain & Abel and the second act involving Noah and his ark. Ultimately it's a musical about family and parental responsibility that affects the audience without being overtly religious.

The 15/20s annual series begins on September 24^th with Heartbreak Help by Justin Tanner in which four women share a motel room in Joshua Tree for a spiritual retreat. The play premiered in LA with strong reviews including Variety, "Tanner's ear remains sharply satirical. Even as he revels in his characters' ridiculousness, he draws them with a sly sympathy. At their most pathetic, they are at their most human,” and the LA Times, "His strongest and funniest piece yet. In a gleaming style all his own he milks the world of aromatherapy and vision quests ruthlessly and brilliantly for laughs.” The second reading will be The Final Jew^th. The 15/20s: Staged Readings of New Works introduces APAC audiences to the development process and paves the way for new work in the regular mainstage programming. The 15/20s will be produced under the AEA Staged Reading Guidelines, which allows 15 hours of combined rehearsal and performance time for actors (20 hours for musicals), hence the name The 15/20s. by Alex Goldberg on December 10.

ASTORIA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER was founded in 2001 by actress Susan Scannell as an Off-Off Broadway theater company that complements main-stage productions with community programming, including writing and performance programs for Queens youth and senior citizens. APAC's 2004 production of Is There Life After High School? was recognized with an Off-Off Broadway Review Award. APAC's 2006 production of Forever Plaid was honored with three New York Innovative Theatre Award nominations, in the categories of Production, Direction, and Choreography. Our productions of A New Brain, Proof and Triumph of Love received nominations for Outstanding Set Design. A recent Reuter's article "Black Culture Lights up the Great White Way" (Sunday Jul 12 2009 By Christine Kearney) raised the point, “As the presidential visit cast a spotlight on Wilson's revival, playwrights and theater observers say both Obama's election and more open theaters and audiences have helped bring more stories of black culture to the New York stage this year. Both on Broadway and off-Broadway, plays and musicals about black culture or issues of race are being praised and more productions are in the works.”

…ANOTHER MAN’S POISON, which opens Off-Broadway on August 12th, follows in this vain. But this team of producers aren't doing it with the backing of a large not-for-profit, with corporate sponsorship, as in Lincoln Center, like Joe Turner's Come and Gone, in fact they are pulling themselves up by their boot straps following an entrepreneurial spirit and raising money from within their community, filling a niche in costly Commercial Off-Broadway where a Black female producer, producing a Black playwright is a historical rarity.

After Mark loans Helen a copy of James Joyce’s Dubliners, their personal relationship deepens, complicating their sadomasochistic rituals.
