All Danny Wants for Christmas is PRESS!
there's just one thing that he needs
He doesn't care
about the presents
underneath the Christmas tree
Danny just wants you to review
more than you could ever know
make his wish come true
All Danny wants
for Christmas is you,
uuuuuuuuh, press!
Danny won't even hang his stockings
They're up on the fire place
Santa Clause won't make him happy
to leave a toy on Christmas day
He just wants you
to write a feature or an interview
more than you could ever know
make his wish come true
All Danny wants for Christmas is you
uuuuuuuh, press!
Danny don't ask for much this Christmas
He won't even wish for snow
He just wanna see you sittin'
with a press kit and a glow
He wont mind if you don't like him
all he wants is to perform
Roy Arias Theatre is the place
where you can find the Zero crew

World’s first “social ticketing network” aims for launch in 2009
From Ticketrends.com, 12/3/08
Life might get a little more convenient for season ticket holders, theater patrons, subscribers and concert goers with the announcement of the social ticketing Web site, Ovation.com by Event Innovation. Stephen Gilfus, chairman and CEO of the company and a founder of Washington, D.C.-based Blackboard announced the development of Ovation.com. Ovation is a paperless ticketing solution that gives users a hassle free ticketing experience that combines the features of social networking technologies like a robust ticket management solution and "requests for attendance" along with a free membership card. It reduces the hassle of standing in long queues or wasting time making phone calls to find out who can attend events. The entire process is quick, secure and user-friendly and done within a closed network. While there are paperless ticketing solutions available in the market, they lack the capability required for event attendees to manage multiple ticket management for friends, groups, families and co-workers. "Creating a network that truly meets the needs of concert goers that purchase multiple tickets for their friends, sports fans that manage season tickets, or theater patrons that have tickets across a multitude of events was key to our design," said Gilfus.
Event Innovation has developed a technology platform that integrates easily into existing ticketing and gate access systems. According to the company, the new solution has already attracted the interest of several ticketing partners and the company is looking forward to finalizing its partner integrations prior to a 2009 launch. Some key features of Ovation include free registration for individuals, friends and families. When signing up, the user needs to provide a valid credit card and address to validate their membership and receive a membership card. Members who purchase tickets from major ticket providers will be able to have them electronically deposited into their Ovation.com account. Managing and transferring of tickets to people can all be done conveniently with the click of a button. Another useful feature is that a user can import personal and business contacts from Yahoo, Hotmail, Outlook, Google, Linkedin and other social networks.

A quote from a piece in Daily Variety....Are NY drama critics becoming an endangered species?
Are NY drama critics becoming an endangered species?
From Daily Variety, 12/3/08
The pool of Gotham legit critics got a little shallower Tuesday, as word circulated that longtime critic Jacques le Sourd had been let go at the Journal News. Legiters were abuzz with the news, although no official confirmation came from the Journal News or from parent company Gannett. As print publications buckle under the weight of the current economy, legit critics have witnessed a mass exodus in recent weeks: Michael Sommers of New Jersey's Star-Ledger took a buyout; Eric Grode lost his gig when his paper, the New York Sun, folded; Jeremy McCarter left the theater critic post at New York Magazine for the culture beat at Newsweek; and Clive Barnes, a major figure in performing arts journalism and the longtime critic at the New York Post, died. The New York Drama Critics Circle stands at 18 voting members. Tally is down from 22 members earlier this fall. Le Sourd had been with Gannett for more than 30 years. It's not yet clear how the Journal News plans to cover Broadway in his absence, although many assume the outlet will use reviews from wire services Associated Press or Bloomberg. That's also the plan at the Star Ledger, while the Post has said the paper is on the lookout for a replacement for Barnes. New York Magazine is trying out multiple critics on the legit beat. News of the loss of one more critic escalated concern among legiters who have watched media coverage of the industry continue to shrink over the years.

I got this email yesterday and felt compelled to donate immediately. Martin and Rochelle support OOBR/indie theater unconditionally, I feel that I must support them in return. And so I did...I donated to their cause, just like I try to pay for my client's benefits when I'm able to attend.
So, please, support Martin and Rochelle.
Here is the link to their donation request.
Give them a dollar for every time they listed your show, or reviewed it, or gave you a podcast...I'm sure you won't be donating less than $25...they are that prolific.

Here is an excerpt:
As optimistic as we are about the future, there are still states like California, Arizona and Florida that are lagging behind in believing that "all people are created equal"!!! Shame on them!
In this time of change, I hope that we will being to see changes in the current audience environment. We need a stimulus package here. We need to ban together as the OOBR unit and seek out new seat buyers and artist enthusiasts.
Some ways to attract young audiences is to attack them where they are hiding. Smoke them out in their caves (aka dorm rooms or studio apartments) and introduce them to the best that New York has to offer.

I "find no greater joy than cackling over a beautiful little orphaned theater piece at a tiny off-Broadway house that no one can find, despite the best efforts of the show's beleaguered, underpaid publicist. And, as soon as the performance is over, you shamble off to your cave to hunch over your computer for hours in an effort to tell someone about it."
I am the underpaid publicist, but I have the same hopes and intentions as you the finder of the lost arc. And my battle is to help you press "send our best writers to hunt talent in places where tourists are scared to go."

What if there were no reviews?
Read Ken Davenports Blog to find out! When coming up with your marketing strategy, imagine that the newspapers and magazines and didhelikeit.coms have been destroyed. Imagine that there is no holding out for a big boost when the papers say that your play is the next best thing since sliced Cats.
Imagine that you'd have to rely solely on the strength of your product and what the people say about it.
You can't control the reviews. So don't count on them.

The 2008-2009 season will include the inclusion of new work to APAC's regular programming. Wojtunik will premiere The 15/20s: Staged Readings of New Works, introducing APAC audiences to the development process and paving the way for new work in the regular mainstage programming. The 15/20s will be produced under the AEA Staged Reading Guidelines, which allows 15 hours of combined rehearsal and performance time for actors (20 hours for musicals), hence the name The 15/20s.
APAC’s seventh season will kick-off in February with Ragtime, the epic musical by the award-winning composer/lyricist team Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens and book writer Terrence McNally. Wojtunik, who will direct, says, "The spirit of unfailing optimism that permeates the characters in this story, even in the midst of a country faced with enormous changes, feels more vital today than it did when it first opened on Broadway ten years ago." In May APAC will produce Lillian Hellman's controversial masterpiece The Children's Hour, directed by Jessi D. Hill, recipient of the 2008/09 Denham Fellowship from the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation.

"A level of hilarity that even non-moms will appreciate!" --Time Out NY Kids
The critically acclaimed off-Broadway production of Amy Wilson’s one-woman show MOTHER LOAD is embarking on a National Tour. Originally slated for a 7 week run in New York City in May 2007, MOTHER LOAD ran for 9 weeks to sold-out houses. After seeing the show, The Road Company knew that MOTHER LOAD belonged on the road. The tour will premiere in Charlotte, NC on September 30th at 7:30 pm, as the inaugural production at the Studio Theater (101 N. College Street Charlotte, NC 28202).
“The response has been remarkable,” author Wilson comments. “I thought I was the only one who ran myself ragged and still had a house that looked like the town dump. I thought I was the only one with a voice in my head saying ‘Don’t be happy! Worry!’ But the audiences who have seen this show—women and men, parents, and not, perfectionists all—said they were a lot like me: racked with guilt over all the things we won’t, in a million years, have time to do anything about, except feel bad. I can’t wait to meet audiences all over this country and spread the message: lose the ‘Mother Load,’ and remember how to enjoy your kids.”

Elizabeth Rex self-consciously explores themes of power, gender, identity, and the inevitability of loss. At its heart is the struggle of two misunderstood characters who seek to understand one another: Ned Lowenscroft, the flamboyant actor who has based his theatrical career on the portrayal of Shakespeare's great female leads, and the domineering Queen Elizabeth, the monarch who has sacrificed her traditional place in society as a wife and mother in order to retain control of the throne. -- Claire Epstein, New Theater Corp

"A soul satisfying ... work of theatrical resourcefulness. A compelling story that flows with grace and carries the rush of anticipation. The story moves, the characters have many dimensions and their transformations are plausible and moving. The musical is freeing. It is penetrated by honesty and it glows."
“It is not often that material moves me to tears, but this was one of those occasions. The Spitfire Grill has the heart and soul that your Producers and Full Montys cannot begin to approach. The amiable country flavored tunes and lyrics are rendered with the kind of conviction and expertise that make them transcendent. What in normal times would be a joy is, in these troubled ones, sheer nourishment."

WAKE UP MARCONI! Marconi, our namesake, sought to connect the people of the world across seemingly insurmountable distances, and we strive to do the same. In today’s climate the distance is not merely physical, it is multi-faceted; people are separated by gender, by race, by language, by ideology, by fear.
We seek to bridge that gap, bringing communities together and fostering cross-cultural communication.
We wish to educate, and we believe that theatre is the best way to do so; holding up a mirror to society and showing everyone that we are not so different after all. Wake Up Marconi! aims to produce two professional shows per year. For each one, we intend to have an associated charity performance with a workshop targeting the affiliated marginalized population that the show addresses. We also intend to provide workshops to different communities fostering new works showcasing said communities. Through these actions, we hope to effect positive change and surmount the insurmountable.
The New York International Fringe Festival began less than a week ago, and already my heart is broken. For schedule-related reasons, I'm not going to be able to see "The Deciders," a rock musical about the possible shortcomings of our current president and his pals, or "Becoming Britney," whose title seems self-explanatory. I am also sorry to be missing Anaïs Nin Goes to Hell

This type of sudden predicament happens in the theater world, and the answer has always been “The Show Must Go On”, but for a small and fresh theater company that has only been around for three years, this was a first. Fortunately Kristina Kohl, a company actress, and David Stallings’ original inspiration for the role of Cleopatra, jumped right in, grabbed a script, scribbled down stage directions and saved the night.
Duncan Pfaster of Broadway World who was in the audience said, “on the night I attended, Ms. Benedict had a death in the family, and Kristina Kohl, another actress from Maieutic Theatre Works, took over her role with 4 hours notice, on book, and gave a fine performance.”
MTWorks, the cast and crew of Anaïs Nin Goes to Hell would like to dedicate the remaining 3 performances to Maggie Benedict and the memory of her father.
“When Maggie told us that she lost her father and had to go back to South Africa, I was devastated. Devastated for her loss of her father so suddenly-I can't imagine the pain of that and I feel terrible that she has to go through that. I was also devastated to lose her in the show. She played the role of Cleopatra so beautifully and brought so much fire and individuality to the part that I knew that losing her would change the effect of the play. I of course understood the situation and agreed there was no question about her having to leave and take care of her family. She will be missed.” Said Cristina Alicea, director of Anais Nin Goes to Hell.
Stallings immediately thought of Kohl as the replacement because she was the actress who had told him Cleopatra belonged in the play. Even with their history, Stallings was amazed at her ability to step into the role. He remarked, “When we lost Maggie, Kristina did not hesitate to save us--she has nerves of steel. It was a blessing for us to find an actress who implicitly understood the character and was able to walk seamlessly in her shoes. I have never met an actress with the ability to enter stage with not even a full day rehearsal, with a script in hand, and then wink at me when it was over.”
“For a play about woman, but written by a man, it tapped into the greater female psyche…” -NY Press
“[Shelly] Feldman is a gleeful delight as Nin- owning every moment she's onstage with stylish grace and power- one really believes her as the catalyst for all the change her character inspires.” –Broadway World

“Cristina Alicea's direction is wonderful- she brings the most out of the talented cast.” –Broadway World
